John F. Mellon

John F. Mellon , 89, Frackville, and formerly of Morea, passed away Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Morea on August 22, 1925, he was a son of the late Peter and Grace Polansky Mellon. He graduated from MahanoyTownshipHigh School in 1943 and attended the McCann School of Business and the Philadelphia Meat Cutters Institute. He was employed by Acme Markets, Wilkes-Barre, for 40 years and retired in 1989.

John served with the US Navy Amphibious Forces in World War II in the European Theater, and the U.S. Navy Seabees, Exeter, England.

He was a member of Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Church, MahanoyCity, and the Knights of Columbus, James A. Hogan Council 2580, Frackville where he currently served as the Grand Knight. As a 78 year veteran in the Boy Scouts of America from the Hawk Mt. Council, Reading, he served 38 years as the Cub Master of Cub Pack #754 from ChristLutheranChurch, MahanoyCity, where 48 Eagle Scouts moved from the Cub Scout rank and he also co-chaired the "Eagle Scout of the Year" Award. He also received the Scout District Award of Merit in 1981, Scout Unit #54 Dedicated Unit Leader. In 1986 he was the Boy Scout Troop #54 Chairman, First Eagle Scout Reunion 2004.

He received the "Catholic Youth Award" by Bishop Thomas Welsh, The Mahanoy City "Citizen of the Year" by the B.P.O.E. Elks #695 in 1986 and was honored as the Mahanoy City Memorial Day Grand Marshall in 2009.

His contributions to the community include Mahanoy Twp. High School Reunion Financial Secretary, Past Vice President Morea Citizen Water Co., Life Member of the Humane Fire Co. #1, MahanoyCity, Life member and Inner Guard for the B.P.O.E. Elks #1533, Frackville, and Life Member of the Sampson World War II Navy Veterans Reunion Chairman. He also holds a Lifetime Membership with the American Legion Post #398, Frackville, and served as Adjutant, American Legion 13th District Adjutant, and American Legion Department of Pennsylvania.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, are his three brothers, Stephen, Michael and Nicholas Mellon and his four sisters, Mary Swank, Helen Horn, Anna Petty and Sue DeVita.

Surviving are his wife of 65 years Margaret "Kreitzer" Mellon; daughter, Margaret Mary Gownley, and her husband, Robert, Frackville, and son, Dr. John N. Mellon and his wife, Christine, Drums; grandchildren, Colleen Hoang, and her husband, Viet, Thoroughfare, NJ, and Ann Margaret Gownley, Frackville; great grandchildren, Lily Hoang and Cameron Hoang.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Church in MahanoyCity with Rev. Kevin P. Gallagher, pastor, as the celebrant. Interment with full military honors will be held at St. Fidelis Cemetery in MahanoyTownship. Family and friends may call Friday evening from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. until time of mass at Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Church in MahanoyCity.
