Helen C. Mengel
Helen C. Mengel , 430 Washington Street, Frackville, died Tuesday at Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg.
Born in St. Clair she was a daughter of the late Anthony and Kathryn " Gregitis " Montalto. She had taught in the Pottstown area, Pine Grove school district, St. Ambrose in Schuylkill Haven and at the former Immaculate Heart Academy, Ft. Springs. Later in her career, she was a substitute teacher in Frackville until her retirement.
She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Frackville. She was a graduate of St. Clair High School and Penn State University. Helen was a member of Penn State Alumni Association, The Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court St. James # 1029, Ladies of the Elk's, #1533, both of Frackville. Both she and her husband were members of the Frackville Centennial Committee and she had been a member of numerous organizations in Frackville throughout the years.
She was preceded in death by her husband Walter "Doc" Mengel in 1978, a sister Anna Mae Wierman and a son-in-law George F. Sodaitis.
Surviving are a son Walter W. " Butch " and his wife Sandra Mengel, Frackville, two daughters; Kathryn Mary and her husband Thomas James, Brodheadsville and Laura M. Sodaitis, Downingtown, a brother, William Montalto, Richmond, VA, three grandchildren Mary Kay James, Wendy Kronkowsky and David Mengel, also six great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday from the Thomas M. Sullivan Funeral Home, Frackville. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Frackville, with Rev. David W. Karns, pastor, as the celebrant. Interment will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Frackville. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 6 until 8 p.m..
