Evelyn A. Dempsey

Evelyn A. ( Grutza ) Dempsey RN , entered eternal rest on December 25, 2011, at the home of her son John, in Springfield, Ohio.

She was born in Shenandoah November 11, 1925, a daughter of the late John "Jada" and Anna Kalisensky Grutza. She attended Annunciation school and graduated from Shenandoah Catholic High School in 1943. She graduated from Georgetown University Hospital School of Nursing where she received, at graduation, the award for the 'Outstanding Bedside Nurse". She worked in surgery at Georgetown, Locust Mountain State Hospital, for many years, Hazleton State Hospital and retired from St. Joseph's satellite in Shenandoah.

She was a member of Annunciation B.V.M Catholic Church , Shenandoah, where she was active in numerous parish affairs. She served as a Eucharistic Minister and lector, member of the Community Relations Committee, Christmas and summer bazaars, Pierogie makers and Renew. In 1964 along with Rev. Robert Quinn she was instrumental in establishing the Catholic Nurses Guild of Eastern Schuylkill County. She was past president of the Polish Ladies Social Club, member of the centennial chapter of Polka Belles. She also volunteered for many civic organizations and events.

She loved to spend time in her kitchen and entertain her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years John " Jack " Dempsey, three brothers; John, Clarence and Ronald Grutza

She is survived by a daughter Anne and her husband Dr. Fred Herskowitz, Piedmont CA, son John and his wife Dolly Dempsey, Springfield, Ohio, three grandchildren who loved to visit Shenandoah, Lisa and her husband Eric Rager, Washington, DC , Michael Herskowitz, San Diego, CA and David and his wife Jenny Herskowitz, Piedmont CA also sisters-in-law, Antionette and Helene Grutza, both of Shenandoah and Frances Grutza, Harrisburg, several nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Evelyn at 10 a.m. on Saturday in Annunciation B.V.M. Church, Shenandoah, with Rev. Richard Brensinger, as the celebrant. Interment will be in Our Lady of Dawn cemetery, Shenandoah Heights. Friends may call at the church on Saturday morning from 8:30 a.m. until time of mass. There will be no viewing on Friday evening.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers contributions, in Evelyn's name, be made to either Community Mercy Hospice, 444 W. Harding Rd., Springfield, Ohio, 45504 or to Annunciation Church Memorial Fund , Shenandoah.
