Charles J. “Chuckie” Cress, 90, of Ashland, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 28th, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Ashland, he was a son of the late Peter and Marie (Winters) Cress. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandmother, Rose Winters; and his siblings, James Cress, Joseph Cress, Elizabeth Cress, and Roseann Wayne.

Chuckie was a self-employed coal miner and owned and operated C & K Coal Company in Tremont. He was a member of the Independent Coal Miners and was also featured in a movie about bootleg coal mining.

Chuckie was a man who commanded a room with his presence. He was strong and charismatic, yet humble, and will be remembered for the lasting impression he made on all who knew him.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Marie D. (Buhl) Cress; his children, Charles Cress Jr. and his wife, Melissa; Greg Cress and his wife, Teri; his grandchildren, Kirstyn, Rylee, Garrett, Alexander, and Kambel; and many great-grandchildren; He is also survived by his sister, Marie McCabe.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 2nd at 6 p.m. at the Thomas M. Sullivan Funeral Home, 403 West Main Street, Girardville, with Rev. Christopher Zelonis officiating. Friends and family are invited to his viewing from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
